SOCIOPOLITICAL GRIEF: WRITING OUR COLLECTIVE HEARTBREAK
SOCIOPOLITICAL GRIEF: WRITING OUR COLLECTIVE HEARTBREAK
WITH CAROLYN ZAIKOWSKI
SATURDAY MARCH 28th, 10AM-2PM ET
Virtual via Zoom
We are often taught to ignore our deep grief over sociopolitical situations. Yet we are collectively living in, and witnessing, collective trauma and loss. These include fascism, white supremacy, genocide, destruction of the earth and animals, racism, gender-based oppression, class struggle, and more.
This phenomenon can be called sociopolitical grief or collective grief. And it is real.
Sociopolitical grief is profound, complex, and personal. Yet we are told we are too sensitive, too intense. We hold it alone, or do not even realize we are experiencing it.
This gathering is a chance to use writing and written reflection to acknowledge our sociopolitical grief in community, to know we are not alone, and to remember our power. We will spend our time together reflecting through various in-class writing exercises and contemplations. We will optionally share our writing in small or large groups, with any feedback given in an encouraging spirit of solidarity, validation, and empowerment.
Everyone is welcome, including those who don’t consider themselves serious writers, and those who do.
CANCELLATIONS, REFUNDS, AND OTHER POLICIES:
Zoom link and any related materials will be emailed to registrants by 2 days before the start of class.
Cancellation policy: Cancellations five days or more before the class begins will receive a full refund minus a $25 processing fee. For cancellations after that, there can be no refunds, as time is needed to fill cancelled spots. For similar reasons, there can also be no full or partial refunds for students who miss classes after the class has begun, or for students who have attended one or more classes but are dissatisfied with the class. In the rare case that I need to cancel a class, registered students will receive a full refund.
Conduct policy: I reserve the right to use my expertise and discretion to remove students from class, without refund, who display behaviors and speech which are racist, sexist, transphobic, homophobic, ableist, or otherwise disrespectful and non-compliant with class policies regarding safe spaces and common sense anti-oppression conduct.
By registering for this class, you are acknowledging that you fully understand and consent to these policies.
NOTE ABOUT SLIDING SCALE:
For the sake of community solidarity, I make every effort to create a reasonable and honor system-based sliding scale system, while also needing to honor my own financial situation. Please use discretion in deciding what price you can afford, keeping in mind that the financial aid price was designed for those who otherwise wouldn't be able to attend. If you decide this is the case for you, please do feel free to use it with no questions asked. Thanks! -Carolyn
